Rosie's Rescue
by Edward Ritts
illustrated by Janet Oliver
Rosie is a Roaseate Spoonbill, an odd pink bird like a Flamingo but with an unusual beak. She wades in low water and sifts through the mud and sand with her spoonbill for food like shrimp and crabs.
The story starts when Rosie is hatched and immediately finds trouble when a wind storm approaches and blows the nest from the mangrove tree. The nest lands in the water with Rosie and her brothers, Roger and Robert, still in it!!
The rescue of the little bird and her rehabilitation at a bird hospital educates children about nature, kindness, hope and the life-cycle of the Roseate Spoonbill.
Author Edward Ritts lived all his adult life in the Florida Keys. He is retired from the Miami, Florida police department.
Illustrator Janet W. Oliver is an artist from Traverse City, Michigan and owner of Grand Traverse Arts (GrandTraverseArts.com).
