Gradual Clearing: Weather Reports from the Heart
After sharing a weekly essay on Interlochen Public Radio since 2005, Karen Anderson has collected 120 essays into an illustrated volume called, Gradual Clearing: Weather Reports from the Heart.
“Listeners have been asking for a collection,” Anderson said, “And now I can have a beautifully illustrated book to share.” The short, poetic essays feature pen-and-ink drawings by Joyce Koskenmaki, a nationally recognized artist from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Local author Anne-Marie Oomen says, “Karen Anderson has woven wit, wonder, and her particular way with words into concise jewels of life wisdom.”
In his Foreword to the book, IPR Executive Director Peter Payette writes, “Her craft is to consider simple and often subtle details of everyday life—a family heirloom, moldy olives in the fridge, lilacs in bloom, the memory of a dead neighbor jogging down the street—and slowly distill wisdom from these ordinary bits of life through a process of careful remembering that can take years.”
