New book details I-75 exits and towns
Driving Michigan: Mile by Mile on I-75
Michigan’s Interstate 75 extends from the Michigan border with Ohio north to Sault Ste Marie, a five and a half hour driving experience that can be quite dull, until now. The brainchild of author Leslie Mertz, Driving Michigan Mile by Mile on I-75 describes interesting features at each exit and at many mile markers along the way.
From the book:
• EXIT 37 Detroit Metro Airport had its first airplane landing in 1930.
• Exit 173 “you are now close to the town that proudly holds the annual August festival honoring…the pickle. Linwood is a small community…”
• Exit 313 “The town of Topinabee (pronounced TOP-in-uh-bee) is about a mile to the southeast on the western shore of Mullett Lake (the fifth largest inland lake in Michigan).”
• Mile marker 350 “The freeway crosses a small stream called Rabbit Back Creek here. The creek flows to the east about a mile or so where it empties into Lake Huron’s Horseshoe Bay.”
And so it goes, all the way through mile marker 349, which honors the beauty of the northern tree, the Tamarack, “one of the few conifers that loses its needles every year and regrows them in the spring”. Then on to the International Bridge and Canada, exit 394 at the Soo.
In addition to the Exit and Mile Marker information, Mertz’s teaching experience emerges through her Brain Busters, a series of questions and answers on three levels of difficulty. Brush up on Michigan history and science (especially biology, Mertz’s specialty) throughout the book.
Leslie Mertz, PhD, came up with the idea to engage travelers driving Michigan’s I-75 through her own experience moving up and down the concrete slab. She wondered about things and found the answers, now assembled into a book.
Did you know that at mile marker 37, the city of Taylor was named after none other than Zachary Taylor, Mexican War soldier and 12th president of the U.S?
The bibliography and index will delight teachers and parents looking to spice up the Michigan history curriculum and of course, parents looking for an alternative to DVD’s and iTunes.
